Let’s start with a metaphore. Just look at XHTML, CSS, web standards and quality web development. One can learn all these techniques and live by them. After this learning experience one can build great websites that excel in beauty, usability, elegance and many other things that seem important to truly dedicated web developers.

However… we can’t change the web development world as a whole. A lot of people will never see the change, or even value it’s importance. A large part of the world won’t even take any advantage of the change because they keep using inferior browsers. They’ll never see a difference. In fact they might even think nothing at all changed.

The same thing is true for life. Again there’s surprisingly little we can change. Some people say ‘success is a choice‘, as if it’s up to oneself to be rich, famous, healthy and happy. Hard work! Work hard and you’ll be rewarded. Another misconception. so many people work hard. Very hard. In a factory. Right until their back gave up and they couldn’t do a thing anymore. It sure as hell doesn’t bring them very much except for enough money to survive and… a permanently damaged spinal cord. So screw the hard work thing in an attempt to change things. Some people get lucky, some don’t. Life isn’t fair. I’m sure people living in around here (africa nations) can tell you all about it.

Just like in web development, we can’t really change the way people look at us. Whether we’ve adopted all modern techniques and became a true ’standardista’, most people won’t ever see the difference. I guess it’s time to realize that the only thing one can really change is himself. No matter what we try to tell people, no matter what we do, it’s not in our hands to change the way they look at us. In the very lucky case, something does change in the way people look at a person it can only mean one thing: It’s THOSE PEOPLE who made a change. It isn’t the person himself. If one would think he accomplished this himself he’d be fooling himself and giving himself way too much credit.

So here I am… life keeps showing me it’s futile to expect other people or anything in the world around me to notice the change. Hmmm… no.. that sounds too harsh. Some part of the world around us and the people around us will notice but to really see and feel the change requires some serious change on the side of the beholder.

So, here’s reality applied to life itself. We can screw things up in a split second which will take months, years or even forever to repair. Ask that Microsoft developer who applied the wrong box model to Internet Explorer’s rendering engine. We can’t change things on our own and we can’t change a thing about what people think of us. Not Joe Average on the street, not our friends, not our family and not even our loved ones. We can only change ourselves. And … I swear to God that’s what I’m doing.

This is the biggest sales season of the year. Shops prepare all year for this moment. To boost sales, some shops in victoria island, ikoyi and ikeja offer some tantalizing price reductions, 30% off, buy one get one free etc. Woolworths is doing a clearance sales of 50% to 70% off.

They work on your psyche until you give up the fight, switch your brains off and give in fully to your emotions. There is a nice sounding word for this victory: consumer confidence. In plain english – Buy now, regret later.

You must buy new clothes for every member of the household, especially the kids, take them to see ‘father Xmas’, send gifts/hampers/cards to relatives, friends and foes. You must decorate your living room with lighting effects even if only for the 30 minutes NEPA will afford you electricity, renew or upgrade your cable subscription, spend on more cooking, kill a chicken, turkey or goat depending on your purse etc.

You must let the village folks know that your foray into the city paid off after all. It is the law. If you break the law, your reputation is gone. Shame the devil by splashing out for those in the village.

Simply get a small cute basket and fill it up with cute gifts like designed handkerchief, male roll-on, shaving cream, boxers, cufflinks, tie, and his favorite musicals all recorded in one CD would not be a bad idea for your loved one. The key is to make everything in the basket blue and personalized.

The result – a completely won-over man swept off his feet by the industry of his woman. He would be thankful that you took notice of his hurting wardrobe. For me, I am set on doing something very creative and good with my hands. I intend to string very beautiful beads for my aunties and sisters. For those interested in this, one advise though – try and get the colour combination right.

The whole idea is to encourage you to participate in the season blues, spread some love, and enjoy yourself without being in the red and green with envy!

While, at it remember that it is wise to know that your November salary is for December expenses and your December salary is for January expenses. It is so easy to forget this in the midst of the battle for your emotional attachment towards the season, especially as some employers pay December salary mid month. If you mix it up, you will join the bandwagon of people that believe that January is the longest month in the year.

Preparation time: This varies from person to person. If you can spend lot of time on preparation then 2 months should be sufficient. Else if you don’t leave your office till late in the evening like I do, 3-4 months should suffice. It is a good idea to start earlier and have look at the questions, lessons and GMAT structure and gradually pick up steam to reach your peak on the GMAT day.

Material- Official Guide (OG) is a must combined with either Kaplan or Princeton. I used OG (for the quantitative section) and Kaplan (for Verbal). You can use the lessons and strategies from Kaplan and practice OG questions. I used Kaplan and the lessons were really helpful

By section
Quantitative:“ The quantitative skills tested on GMAT are pretty basic. Most of the Math required is already taught in school curriculum and requires simple formulas. Solve each question and then look at the answers. Books do recommend you to use elimination and other techniques to save time. However, I think anyone from India or engineering background should be able to solve each and every problem with time to spare. If you are reasonably good in Math, only place you can lose points is data sufficiency. Sometimes you see a question, assume something and jump to conclusion. You can go wrong there. For example, there might be 2 linear equations and you have been asked if to find value of one variable. It might seem that you can use both equations to get a unique solution but if you look carefully, both equations might reduce to similar forms.

If you not that strong quantitatively, start your preparation early and read all reference material on math once or twice then practice lots of questions from OG. Lessons are not as important as Math reference if you slightly weaker in this section. If you get your basics right you can easily do well in this section.

Verbal:“ I had a notion that your verbal score is totally based on verbal skills that you have developed over the years and it is not possible to improve it significantly. By the time I wrote GMAT I knew this was not the case. GMAT verbal follows specific patterns and answers are arrived at following certain rules. Of course your score depends on your verbal abilities but you can improve them significantly. That is where I missed out.

First thing is to make sure that you take the lessons for each of the 3 sub-sections. Kaplan lessons are great. Take them more than once till you remember all the points mentioned on the lessons.

Sentence correction:“ From lessons you will find that there are only few variations of grammatical mistakes tested on the GMAT. Lessons takes you through each of them and there tells you how to spot them. Keep that in mind and apply them without exception while practicing questions. Make sure to practice enough, such that spotting errors comes naturally. Finding the correct answer from here on should not be difficult.

Reading Comprehension:“ Again, lessons help a lot. When you read that passage make sure to think critically and question what’s the point, what does the author want to convey. This way you would understand what the author is trying to Imply and get the context and scope. Most RC questions on GMAT are based on these. Also for some questions, wrong answer choice might look more in scope and context of the actual passage i.e. by directly referring material in the passage. If you question these choices by “Is this really what author wanted to convey?” you can find flaws in these choices.

Critical reasoning:“ For this read the question before the text so that you know what you are looking for. You need to concentrate hard and spend some time on these questions.

Overall, the 3 most important factors that determine your final score are “ Focus, hard work and self-belief.

If you are, you’re not alone. As millions of workers update their resumes, one of the top concerns is length. Not long ago, job seekers followed the resume golden rule: No resume should exceed one page. However, today’s job seekers are finding that rule no longer applies.

In this time of mass confusion, the solution is simple: Use common sense. If you are just graduating, have fewer than five years of work experience or are contemplating a complete career change, a one-page resume will probably suffice. Some technical and executive candidates require multiple-page resumes. If you have more than five years of experience and a track record of accomplishments, you will need at least two pages to tell your story.

Your Resume Is Not an Autobiography
Don’t confuse telling your story with creating your autobiography. Employers are inundated with resume submissions and are faced with weeding out the good from the bad. The first step involves quickly skimming through resumes and eliminating candidates who clearly are not qualified. Therefore, your resume needs to pass the skim test. Dust off your resume and ask yourself:

The Sales Pitch
Because resumes are quickly skimmed during the first pass, it is crucial your resume gets right to work selling your credentials. Your key selling points need to be prominently displayed at the top of the first page. If an MBA degree is important in your career field, your education shouldn’t be buried at the end of a four-page resume. An effective way to showcase your key qualifications is to include a Career Summary statement at the top of the first page. On your Monster.com resume, use the Objective section to relay your top qualifications. The remainder of the resume should back up the statements made in your summary.

Use an Editor’s Eye
Many workers are proud of their careers and feel the information on a resume should reflect all they’ve accomplished. However, the resume shouldn’t contain every detail. It should only include the information that will help you land an interview. So be brutal. If your college days are far behind you, does it really matter that you pledged a fraternity or delivered pizza? The editing step will be difficult if you are holding on to your past for emotional reasons. If this is the case, show your resume to a colleague or professional resume writer for an objective opinion.

Eight Tips to Keep Your Resume Concise
1. Avoid Repeating Information.
Did you perform the same or similar job tasks for more than one employer? Instead of repeating job duties, focus on your accomplishments in each position.

2. Eliminate Old Experience.
Employers are most interested in what you did recently. If you have a long career history, focus on the last 10 to 15 years. If your early career is important to your current goal, briefly mention the experience without going into the details. For example: Early Career: ABC Company – City, State – Served as Assistant Store Manager and Clerk, 1980-1985.

3. Don’t Include Irrelevant Information.
Avoid listing hobbies and personal information such as date of birth or marital status. Also, eliminate outdated technical or business skills.

4. Cut Down on Job Duties.
Many job seekers can trim the fat off their resumes simply by removing long descriptions of job duties or responsibilities. Instead, create a paragraph that briefly highlights the scope of your responsibility and then provide a bulleted list of your most impressive accomplishments.

5. Remove “References Available Upon Request.”
Many job seekers waste the valuable last line of the resume on an obvious statement. Unless you’re using this as a design element, remove it.

6. Use a Telegraphic Writing Style.
Eliminate personal pronouns and minimize the use of articles when preparing your resume.

7. Edit Unnecessary Words.
Review your resume for unnecessary phrases such as “responsible for” or “duties include.” The reader understands you were responsible for the tasks listed on your resume.

8. Customize Your Resume for Your Job Target.
Only include information relevant to your goal. This is particularly important for career changers who need to focus on transferable skills and deemphasize unrelated career accomplishments.

The grading focused on the quality of the titles, introductions, purposes, grammars, relevance, creativity, contents, pros & cons and conclusions of the papers/projects. The highest score was 91% and the lowest was 5%. A big congratulation goes to Zainab Olubukola Ajia who is the only Nigerian on the award list.

The event was the 2005 MTV Europe Music Award held at the prestigeous Atlantic Pavilion located at the heart of the ancient city of Lisbon. Before the presentation on Thursday night, bookmakers had actually predicted his victory considering his exploits on the music channel since its launch early this year in Lagos.

In fact, Alex Auks, Vice President and General Manager, MTV base, was full of confidence that the Nigerian pop music sensation would break record as the first African artiste to win the award. The category which made its debut on the global live music event at the Lisbon outing was created according to Okosi, to underscore the contribution that African artistes have made to the realization of the objective of the music channel. “This is a landmark year for Africa. First, MTV launched its first ever African channel, MTV base, and now it has created this milestone award to recognise the artistry, creativity and passion of African musicians“.

“We have so much respect for 2-FACE and for all he has achieved so far in Africa – we are delighted that this Award nomination will bring his name and music to a broader audience – the global stage of the MTV Europe Music Awards – with more than one billion viewers!” Okosi said before the presentation.
