The journey actually started some years before 29 July 2006 but I will leave that story for another day. It is definitely part of the story and 29 July 2006 would not have come to past without the phase before it. As I type this now, everything looks like yesterday. Has the journey been totally smooth? No…but have I been better off by taking this journey? Definitely YES. Indeed, the experience has been mind-blowing

Are you still wondering what I am talking about? Hmm..It is exactly 3 years today that I invoked the power given to us as men to change names. Yeah… it was a priviledge to have the opportunity to fulfil God’s instruction to man.

“For this reason shall a man leaves his family and cleave to his wife“

I got married to the one that I love. And the result? I found a “good thing”. Indeed, I have obtained favour from God. Olayemi, knowing you is great but having the priviledge to join forces with you on this journey is greater. I have achieved more these past 3 years than I had achieved the years before put together. This is the effect of GRACE and I am not going to take you or this grace for granted for a second.

Baby, I can’t say it enough…I LOVE YOU and I am glad you are part of my world. I just want to let you know that the journey has just started. We have not seen anything yet. Everyday that I wake up with you by my side comes with new strength to fulfil destiny. And I know that with God as the “third person” of our relationship, we will continue to experience HIS hand. I love you so much.

And to my “men in black” on the day – Idowu Opaleye, Dimeji Aboderin, Ayo Oladejo, Seun Olajide, Wale Akinbola, Yemi Adenaike, Toyin Daniel” – you are part of the story. I can’t thank you enough.  Your presence and committment added colour to the foundation. My driver of the day, Mr. Gbolade Shoyemi, what else can I say? God will reward your labour of love. I am waiting for the good news from you oooo. So, don’t keep boiz waiting for too long. My brother from another mother – Hammed Shittu – you have showed on several occassions that, indeed, there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. This experience has taught me several things about the customer relations. On several occassions, I received treat via SMS and I keep wondering to myself what I had done to deserve this. Anyway, it is a great experience and I will be sharing some of the lessons I have learnt on the next few days.

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!”

Your ability to plan well, in advance, is a measure of your overall competence. The better the plan you have, the easier it is for you to overcome procrastination, to get started , and then to keep going. Always remember that you have to win on paper first before you can win in the business world.

The first stage in creating a winning plan is to have a list. Always work from a list. This will help you to stay focused and to maximise your time. When something new comes up, don’t do it immediately. Just add it to the list and focus on doing what is next on the list.

Can you still remember the reasons why you started that business? Those things you ever wanted to be or do when you were growing up? That is only possible if you set your mind to it and plan your time accordingly. Goals act like a magnet, pulling you towards it. The realization of your “dream” requires some goals and action. Planning helps you  stay on track and also helps you to channel your energy right.

Get out a piece of paper now and title it MY DREAMS. Draw four columns and label them: Section, 1 – 5 years, 6 – 25 years, and Date. List everything that comes to your mind. Don’t bother about eliminating anything now. You should focus on creating a master list on which you write down everything you can think of that you want to do some time in the future. This is the place where you capture every idea that comes to or every new task or responsibility that comes up. You can then sort out the items later.

Brainstorm on everything you have under your  “1 – 5 years” and “5 – 25 years“. Fill in the DATE column with the DEADLINE by when you would like to accomplish it. This has become your goal. The next stage is to logically put a plan in place instead of letting things “take care of themselves.” Divide your plans into yearly, monthly, weekly and daily. Create your daily list the night before in line with your 5-year plan, at the end of the workday.

Move everything that you have not yet accomplished onto your list for the coming day and then add everything that you have to do the next day. This makes your subconscious mind to work on your list all night long during sleep. You might even wake up with great ideas and insights that you can use to get your job done faster and better than you had initially thought.

As you work through the day, tick off the items on your list as you complete them. A good journal will help you to achieve this while helping you to create a visual picture of accomplishment. Seeing myself working progressively through my list motivates and energizes me and I believe you would derive the same benefit. As you work through your lists, you will feel more and more effective and powerful. You will feel more in control of your life. You will be naturally motivated to do even more. You will think better and more creatively and you will get more and better insights that enable you to do your work even faster.

]]> One of the toughest decisions she ever had to make was whether or not she should apply to a doctoral program at a prestigious university. She tossed and turned for three full nights over the decision. She was in agony over whether or not she had what it took to be accepted into such a well-known scholarly program. Ever since she was a child, she always dreamt of becoming a professor but the road to such an endeavor is a narrow one.

Many of her friends and peers whom she considers to be the best and brightest, the cream of the crop, applied to the same doctoral program and received rejection letters. She watched many of them roll over in tears, some cried silently while others decided to apply to other universities only to be rejected again.

During her professional life, she became no stranger to the “I regret to inform you letters” from many different agencies and for many different reasons. There was no way she could withstand another rejection. To the reader, all rejection letters bear the same message: a lot of people don’t think you or your idea is good enough for them. So she continued to ponder over whether or not she would complete the application. At the last minute, she decided to complete and submit the application.

She knew that she would have to wait forty-five days for a decision about my acceptance into the doctoral program. Forty-five days seemed like an eternity to her. She thought about her friends and colleagues and their professional experiences. Some of them were Deans, Provosts, and full ranked Professors, and they received rejection letters. As she thought about that, she immediately felt that she made a mistake by applying because she was not a Dean, Provost, or even close to becoming a professor. Doubt set in and she accepted the fact that she was not good enough to be in such a program.

Needless to say, the mailman became her most anticipated visitor. On July 8, 2004, she finally received the letter that held the answer to her future. She purposely didn’t open it because it was thin. Rejection letters are usually thin. She stared at it for what seemed like hours before she mustered up the courage to open it.

The letter read, “Dear Ms. Jones, we are pleased to accept you into our doctoral program… She didn’t finish reading the letter because she was too busy doing cartwheels, backward flips, and all kinds of crazy movements that revealed her inner joy at such a letter. From a glance, one would have thought she had lost my mind, but a closer look would have revealed a woman who was happy that she made the decision to take the first step toward her professional destiny.

You should never base your potential to succeed on the failure of others to do so. Always believe in yourself because when you do, you will discover that others believe in you too. Don’t let anything or anyone scare you out of pursuing your dream.

If you have the vision to see it, you have the potential to do it.

Don’t distract yourself by looking at statistics and averages. You are not average. You are meant for greatness, and the path to greatness is littered with failure and forgotten dreams.I would suggest you do the following:

1. Write down 3 of your wildest dreams.
2. Write down 3 steps you will take TODAY toward that dream.
3. Takes those steps!

2007 is your year of increase. Do something about your dream today.

]]> I woke up this morning and I feel on top of the world. Why? My write-up on There is a Science to Getting Rich was named “The best Post of The Week, Anywhere” by Political Calculation. This just confirms that word can actually become flesh. I am of the school of thought that you can use your word to create anything you want in life. You may not find it easy at the beginning but your commitment to succeed will surely help you to stay focused.

I am, therefore, using this medium to dedicate this great honour to all of you. I mean YOU, my reader, who have ever come in contact with my write-up either through constantly visiting my blog or RSS readers.. You have given me reasons to keep working on myself to serve you more. 2007 is a great year for us. Let’s prepare to change level.

Year 2006 has been full of many adventures. Many great lessons have been learnt and I would be moving on to year 2007 with those lessons. I had a plan at the beginning of the year to be a blessing to thousands of people either through my write-ups online or personal contact. The task has not been an easy one but I am gradually getting there. This actually placed a demand on me to keep developing myself. At first, I thought I was going to go crazy because of the numerous projects I set out to achieve before the end of 2006.

Starting and finishing a project take a lot of courage especially when it comes to starting a new business. It places a lot of demands on your especially when you are involved in like 4 different projects at the same time. I have therefore learnt that the best way to start is to start. Moreover, I learn that you have to be a lunatic with a strong and long-term belief in your business vision. You must be crazy enough to try anything and everything. You must also be willing to ask anyone and everyone for help. You must be at ease even if no one agrees with your ideas. You must be crazy enough to withstand the extreme highs and lows of business.

My 3rd lesson of the year is on learning how to handle failure. In business, you will ultimately experience more failure than the latter. It is how you handle yourself during dark times that matter. You must not blame yourself or others when failure strikes. Learn what you can about the failure, wallow in it for a couple of weeks, and then move on. Failure is a great teacher. It will teach you humility – a skill that you must learn to become a successful entrepreneur. Humility allows you to appreciate your successes and accept your shortcomings. Humility also allows you to value the contribution of others around you. When you learn the lesson of humility, you have less to lose.

Finally, I learn the importance of building a relationship before you may need it. What you are doing is not as important as who you are working with. A business idea, on its own, is meaningless. You will be making one of the greatest mistakes of your life if you wait till you need to get something done before you reach out to people. Other people mean everything. Your circle or friends can either make you or mar you when you need them most.

Maintaining relationship with the right people can make you millions. Going into business with the wrong people can cost you everything. If you are not certain of the kind of business you want to pursue or what you actually want to do with your life, start by finding a group of people you respect and admire. Choose people you can learn from and work with them on whatever type of projects they are working on. You need a good team. It is hard to accomplish great things when you are all alone. You need team members who can share in your successes and failures.

]]> One of the worst mistakes you can make in networking is reaching out to others only when you are in need. You must, instead, reach out to others long before you need anything at all. You must be able to create a community that can help further your career in both good times and bad. Here are a few ways to do so:

1. Create a company-approved project that will force you to learn new skills and introduce you to new people in your organization.
2. Take on leadership positions in outside organizations that interest you.
3. Join your local alumni club and spend time with people who are doing jobs you might like doing.
4. Enroll in a class that can teach you things related to your current job, or a job you see yourself doing in the future.
5. Participate in online forums and visit blogs that interest you.

Every day brings in new opportunities to build relationships with other people. Focus on your immediate network such as family, existing friends and old acquaintances. They might be able to introduce you to people who can help you meet your goals.

The last thing you want to be anywhere you find yourself is invisible. You have to go out of your way to reach out to others anytime and anywhere. You must make sure that your social and event calendar is always full.The more connections you establish, the more opportunities you are given to make even more connections. So, start today. Invite a colleague out for lunch or dinner. Include other people and watch your web of contacts grow.

When meeting people, you have to take into consideration how and where you got to know them. Strong relationships are built on quality and not quantity. How you spent your time with a client is more important than how much time you spent together. Choose to meet people during events and activities you excel at. Choose to keep company when you are engaging in something you are totally passionate about.

Whether it be dining out in great restaurants, watching baseball games, or talking about politics, choose activities that can bring you closer to people. Whenever you meet someone new, always take it upon yourself to follow up. If you want to establish a relationship, you must make sure that you are remembered. Believe it or not, follow up is the key to success in any field.

Always give yourself between twelve and twenty-four hours to follow up after you meet someone. Send the person a quick note through e-mail and leave mental reminders as to who you are. You are going through all the trouble to meet other people and you might as well make sure that you are noticed. By the way, e-mails are very convenient but there is nothing like a handwritten thank you note to catch a person’s attention.

Here is a crucial point to remember when following up. Do not focus on what they can do for you. Rather, focus on what you can do for them. Give them a reason to want to follow up as well. If you want to build and maintain relationships successfully, you must learn the art of staying in touch. Quick casual greetings (pings) take a lot of effort but you must remember that it is only through repetition that you can become a fixed element in your contacts’ memories.

‘Hurray!!! No more extensive lectures and lengthy assignments from Dr Gunwa… Can’t imagine having to crash in classrooms again! Here is freedom at last! These “evil” people called lecturers that are seen in schools will no longer come our way anymore! Nobody to harass us on deadlines, term papers, group projects! We are now free from all those stresses, crashing overnight for exams in the cold…’

If such thoughts flowed through your mind as you dropped your pen on the last day of your exams in school, you are in good company.

But we had barely spent 3 months beyond this so-called “freedom” when we were called-up to serve our fatherland in what many call “Youth Service”. Alas, we all arrived at school to pick up our call-up letters and proceeded to our different destinations within the country to observe this NYSC Scheme (apologies to those who had to wait for 1+x years after school for call-ups, e.g. friends from OAU, IBADAN Poly to mention a few).

Then began a much more hectic phase of our lives!. Some tagged the NYSC “Now Your Suffering Commences” – an organised array of “meaningless” camp activities, augmented by a stretch of 10 months of time best spent roaming the streets and watching movies! In all, the service year itself is construed by some as unnecessary and aimless supported by Government funds and so should be spent enjoying the little largesse.

Well guys, if this is what you are or have been thinking, I urge you to take a moment and a second look. While you cannot change whether you serve or not, at least for now, you sure can dictate what you do during the season. A sage of the old would pray thus:

“God, I do not ask that you give me duties equal to my abilities, but that you give me ability equal to my duties.”

I desire that this be your prayers, that you then be able to make a message of this great opportunity, make miracle of obstacles, and convert trials to triumphs. The road would not be easy, but you will surely be better for it if you commit your lives to live by the principles outlined in this book.

You could either decide to complain for the whole year (and achieve nothing) or change yourself otherwise, and see “opportunity” in the NYSC that some already called “adversity”. I would rather suggest that you see the NYSC time as a SEED TIME – a time to sow into your future.

Have you ever seen a rose flower before? I bet you have. Good! But while plucking off a flower, did you notice a pinch in your fingers as you hurriedly tried to steal it away from its branch? And would you therefore not like roses again because they have thorns – of course not. This clearly depicts that though it seems NYSC has nothing to offer at first thought, you just have to revamp your attitudes, and try and view the plant as one of wild roses having thorns!

You should employ the NYSC season to look out for the strength in the whichever state you are deployed. Then try and see how you could play it to an advantage to your benefits and those of others around. You should quit complaining, and start living. No successful man drinks of worry and sorrow over what he’s not ready to change. Focus on adding value. Leave out statements that do not empower you, and spare yourself negative ones. Be that woman that sees the jewel in the junk! Apply yourself well to that environment, and get the best out of it!

I am proud to tell you that I am a product of the National Youth Service Scheme and I would forever be grateful to GOD for the great opportunity the scheme provides to add more value to myself and those of people I met during the excercise. Long Live NYSC ! Long Live Nigeria !!

]]> These past few days have been sort of reflections for me.  Something in me just keeps telling me that I am more than this. I feel the urgency to speed up the pace at which I match my actions with my talks. I was reading the responses to my post Looking for Job, Look inward, and one comment strikes me.

I have decided to use this medium to answer one of the questions raised – how can one look inward without having the means to do so? God does not make mistake. As such, HE has created everyone with something unique. There was something going on in his mind when he created you. Your responsibility is to look inward and discover this God-given ability.

This will not come to you on a platter of gold as you have have to make a conscious effort to achieve this. U still remember one of Newton’s laws of motion? Nothing moves until you move. This same law still exists today and governs most, if not all, of all that happens to us in life. You know what? Everyone can not work in paid employment. Someone of us have to start a business even if it means you are using your house as the office. The earlier we accept this reality the better for us.

Heard of Fela Durotoye? He pulled out of what a lot of people seemly call a comfort zone to start his business – VIP Consulting. Today, the company stands as one of the best in the industry. What is his success secret? I may be wrong but I believe his determination to pursue his dream is one of the critical success factor.  Friends, you have what it takes to do whatsoever you want to do. It might stretch you and require that you apply your heart to discipline but it is worth all the effort.

I would like to leave you with this, create a picture of a desired future and carve for yourself the plans that will take you there. Someone said, when the heart of a man decides on a destination, his mind will design the map to take him there. Meanwhile, find below some of my previous posts that I think will be helpful to you.

]]> On 24 October 2005, I posted my first write-up “What drives your startups?” on my blog. Yesterday, 24 October 2006 made it exactly one year that the blog came into the existence. Looking back now, I have enough reasons to thank GOD for helping me thus far. HE is the reason why I have existed till now.

At the same time, I want to use this medium to appreciate all my readers – those that take the pain to drop comments on this blog or not and those that keeps coming back to this blog. You guys are the reasons why I do everything to update my write-ups.

I can still remember the time I was planning to start this project. I had enough reasons to believe that nobody would read my write-ups but today I have all the reasons to thank GOD for giving me the strength to go ahead with the project. Everybody wants a better life, but if you do the same old things in the same old way you will get the same old results. If a farmer plants corn seeds, he gets corn. He doesn’t get tomatoes. If you plant failure, poverty, or violent ideas, it is impossible to harvest success, wealth, or peace. If you want to change the results you are getting, you must change your images and the very thoughts you are thinking, because thought is creative.

It takes courage or pain to stop sabotaging yourself and begin to change old mental and emotional habits. How to begin? First you must have a desire for something greater then the outcome of your old habit. You must have a dream. Awareness of being holds the key to letting go of what you don’t want, and replacing it with what you desire.

Imagine connecting to the “Source of All That Is” and creating a millionaire’s mind, getting that job, starting that business, attracting your perfect partner, or saving your marriage. Imagine succeeding in business, enjoying better health, increasing self-esteem and self-confidence. Imagination has no limits. What you consciously imagine you can experience! Nothing is impossible to imagine.

Some few years ago, I had a discussion with some of my friends on where we would be some years down the line. Today makes it approximately 5 years we had that discussion and I am not surprised that we are all close to the picture we had then if not there yet. It still seems to me like a dream but the truth is that IT IS FIRST WITHIN, THEN WITHOUT.

Every great business starts with just an idea. The computer system you are using to browse now started as an idea in the heart of somebody. Nothing happens by chance. It is up to you to unleash the Power of Imagination and become a conscious co-creator. If you want to create joy, love, success, wealth and peace in the world, create it within yourself first! Re-create yourself and start demonstrating the power of extraordinary thoughts and images.

The leave from office work was to me more than an eye opening experience. It gave me the opportunity to really look within and re-cast the vision of my life. Looking through the events of my life in the past few months, I can boldly say now that I have a better understanding of the assignment at hand. I am definitely going to miss my blog and I know my blog will miss me too. Anyway, I hope to come back fully recharged for the tasks ahead. Calvin Coolidge said,

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

Failure is never an end. It should be seen as a bend towards another destination. Setbacks should be seen as the foundations upon which we build future success or the final excuse for failure — the decision is yours. Nearly everyone who develops an idea works it until it looks impossible and then gets discouraged. That is not the place to become discouraged. It is often at this point that many only see the obstacle and no longer sees their idea. They give in to discouragement, opposition and obstacles not knowing breakthrough is on the horizon. If only they were persistent.

The dictionary defines persistent as: to continue firmly or obstinately. Persistence is a state of mind. In the words of Thomas Edison,

“Just because something does not do what you planned it to do does not mean it is useless…. Reverses should be an incentive to great accomplishment. Results? Why, man, I have gotten lots of results! If I find 10,000 ways something won’t work, I haven’t failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is just one more step forward…. There are no rules here; we are just trying to accomplish something.”

It is therefore normal for someone to have obstacles before success. Even the dictionary puts the word obstacle before success. Obstacles are there to strengthen us and offer progressive measurement of our growing strength. Discouragement sets in when we misunderstand the purpose of obstacles. Persistence is a conscious decision. So, let us train ourselves to be persistent persons.
