You don’t have to keep worrying that your job security depends on the whims or moods of your current boss. The job of your dreams is within your reach. You can even transform your current job into that dream job. The first thing you must do to get the job of your dreams is to fire your boss and hire yourself.

To do this, you must not allow your boss control what happens in your career. You must take charge of your work life. Firing your boss is a mental exercise. You should not walk into your boss’ office tomorrow and demand a resignation. Even if you have fired your boss and hired yourself as a manager, you must appear as loyal and as dedicated as ever.

This time, you will have to determine your own value. You will be setting your own goals. You have to be in charge of selecting the skills you wish to attain. You will also have your own personal work plan. Stephen Pollan and Mark Leville shares some insights on how to undergo a process of self-examination in their book – Fire Your Boss.

1. Write your own job description. Write a brief description of your job. However, do not align yourself with a certain company, profession or specialization. Reflect on what you do each day and each week.
2. Give yourself a performance review. Find out what other people with the same job description earn. Also find out the skills that are valued in this certain field.
3. Define alternate courses. After you have done the two steps above, you will realize that there are alternate courses available to you. Brainstorm about all the other fields and occupations that would suit the job description that you created.
4. Put your plan into writing. Develop your own plan for your work life. Remember that your future plans should not hinder the alternate courses you have defined. Note down the new skills you need to acquire.

You can turn your work life around now. By firing your boss and hiring yourself as manager, you cease to depend on other people for job satisfaction. You can increase your income, spend less time at work, and have more time for your family. By finding the job of your dreams, you can have the life of your dreams.

Why is it that those we term “the selected few” are the ones getting the jobs all time? Do they have two heads? I have heard people even say that it not possible for you to get a job without knowing anybody. The “oga” of a friend who is working in one of the first generation bank even challenged her to say the name of the person who helped her to get the bank’s job. Imagine? The “oga” himself could not believe that someone could get employment in their bank without know anybody.

I am sorry to disappoint you if belong to this same school of thought. I did get my current job without knowing anybody. I am sure so many others have been able to get jobs without knowing somebody in the organisation they work for. They must definitely be doing something right.

I still remember a friend who changed her jobs like 4 times within a year while some others have not been able to secure one. Each time she wanted to change job, something always came her way that made the whole process looked ordinary.

This might have described your experience also. You might have studied Petroleum Engineering or even Fine Art and found yourself working in bank. What makes you tick? What make your creative juices flow and your adrenaline surging? Before you take that job of yours, what is it you really wanted to do? What is it that you would do now if money is not an issue? If you are told now that your bills would be taken care of, what is it that you would rather be doing now?

Take your mind back in time before your parents and committee of concerned family members and relatives tore your dreams to shreds. I can still remember vividly how my mother was persuading me to study Pharmacy after I turned down her plea to study Medicine. I eventually opted for an engineering course.

Sure, writing, painting, sculpture, singing, football etc are seen as time-waster. People see them as hobby rather that something that can put food on the table (have you noticed football and singing has left the banned list?).

Life had a logical sequence: grow up, go to a good school, get a good well paying job, meet a good homely girl/boy, fall in love, get married, buy/build a big home, raise kids and put them through the same drill.

Friends, there is more to life than what you currently experience now. You have got to discover what you love. Your success actually lies in LIVING YOUR PASSION. It is not too late for you to make a turn. Turn your life around 180 degrees now. .
